Kumail Nanjiani: Night Thoughts (2025)

I enjoyed this until the last fifth which turned into a clapterfest, complete with a balance of Marc Maron and Pete Holmes-esque philosophizing.
Die My Love (2025)
AAlex SoutheyDecember 22, 2025
Disappointed. Two great actors deliver their dialogue here in such an obviously written way (whatever that means to you). It is as though they were only given one run through. None of it feels lived in. The couple feels try-hard. "Oooo we still day-drink and talk about fucking and actually say 'fuck' even though our baby's right there. We have dance parties." It's like if a character in Girls wrote a script about their dream of moving from the city without realising it reveals nakedly how pick-me they seem. "I know who John Cassavetes is. Do you? Do you!?" Harmonica. The flies. Flies!

It looks good, and JLAW and RPATZ look good, in an Instagram Ad shot by Terrence Malick way, but Die My Love pales in comparison to its obvious influences. Obviously this is not a film trying to please everyone. Perhaps my tastes are outside of its target. I get that in actuality, in addition to being about relationships (as simple as that is), it's about motherhood, and post-partum, and has in mind a lot of the same themes as If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You, the latter just prioritized the writing over the aesthetic, and it is a better movie for it.

Mother is goes further and is better for it.

Ends with a Riverdale finale vibe (derogatory).

Idk I wanted more from what I sort of perceive as part of Jennifer Lawrence's Wreturn.

Ooooooo life on ye olde homestead. It gets better as it goes, thankfully, because chaos brings conflict, even if I find it all too performative.

"Come on... I don't want to shit in the bush. I want to shit in the toilet." Is really funny though.
Rabbit (2024)

You truly never know what's going on inside a woman's mind. 'Rabbit' shows how a bit of fantasy (or fixation) can bring colours into her otherwise bleak and unsatisfying daily grind.

Joe, the protagonist, is your regular local bookseller, part-time serial killer with complex childhood trauma that leaves you unsure whether you hate him, feel sorry for him, or want to romanticise him. The show plays with tropes that become increasingly self-aware, which is fun. The first person point of view portrays well the fragile, unhinged split between "It's you - it's always been you" and "You never truly understood me..."

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
KKhen JuliaDecember 18, 2025
Profoundly deep and gently human, Everything Everywhere All at Once is the kind of film that holds you with laughter, breaks you open with tears, and then asks you to look at your own life a little more tenderly. It is wildly imaginative, visually stunning, and effortlessly funny, yet beneath all the chaos is a quiet kindness that stays with you. I have never laughed this hard, cried this honestly, or reflected this deeply over a single film in 2025, let alone experienced all of it in one sitting. It truly feels like a reminder to choose love, even in a universe that feels overwhelming. This film was, in every sense, everything, everywhere, all at once.
Nuremberg (2025)
LLucas.December 18, 2025
If you're into WWII history, then you'll find something to like in Nuremberg. It is at times hard to watch, but for the most part it's about a psychologist and a very bad Nazi man. I struggled to empathize with Malek's character, and that made his decisions seem inconsequential to me. Crowe is great as is Michael Shannon. Still, I felt this movie was lacking.

Sullivan's Crossing (2023)
YYulia BorivetsDecember 16, 2025
Sullivan’s Crossing feels like a warm cup of tea after a long day. It’s calm, emotional, and quietly comforting without being boring. The small-town setting, nature in Nova Scotia, and focus on relationships make it easy to sink into, especially if you enjoy stories about second chances and healing.
These series are perfect for cozy evenings when you want something gentle and heartfelt.

A Woman Is a Woman (1961)
KK AugustDecember 16, 2025
It is always nice to step back and review another Nouvelle Vague classic, and I had a copy of this one lying about, mistakenly thinking that it was a faulty DVD.
Thank goodness I took another look.
Anna Karina is still one of the great loves of my life, and to see her hold her own with Belmondo, Brialy, and - why not? - Godard in the story of a housewife who is attempting to keep her family above water with cabaret work and her own fantasies of being in a musical is still one of the more edifying experiences of my film-watching life. I think that she is one of the icons that will never be forgotten and I think that this particular film reveals that she had a real talent and probably gave a better performance here than in 'Alphaville' or 'Bande A Part'.
Watch and learn, folks...

Gueros (2014)

A slice of life movie that is also self referential. It's well acted and has some great shots. It also has a pretty interesting social commentary buried just under the surface. Highly recommend this one.
