It is always nice to step back and review another Nouvelle Vague classic, and I had a copy of this one lying about, mistakenly thinking that it was a faulty DVD.
Thank goodness I took another look.
Anna Karina is still one of the great loves of my life, and to see her hold her own with Belmondo, Brialy, and - why not? - Godard in the story of a housewife who is attempting to keep her family above water with cabaret work and her own fantasies of being in a musical is still one of the more edifying experiences of my film-watching life. I think that she is one of the icons that will never be forgotten and I think that this particular film reveals that she had a real talent and probably gave a better performance here than in 'Alphaville' or 'Bande A Part'.
Watch and learn, folks...

It’s unmistakably the work of a genius. The line between comedy and tragedy is blurred, as stage-like setups and deliberate Brechtian techniques prevent any descent into sentimentality. Yet beneath all the self-awareness lies a quiet melancholy. The dialogue between Jean-Paul Belmondo and the debt collector is one of many moments where Godard’s flair for wry, distinctly French wit shines through.

Jean-Luc Godard’s third feature and first in color bursts with primary hues and bold irreverence. In this modern urban fable, he strips gender dynamics down to their most elemental forms, uncovering both humor and frustration. Like many of Godard’s women, Anna Karina’s character insists on being seen first and foremost as an individual—before any label or role.
