Artem KornosDecember 14, 2025This part definitely snaps the franchise back to life with a wicked grin and a generational twist to spice things up. The kills are darkly funny, inventive, and mean in all the right ways. A subtle reference to the second part feels like a gentle reminder that death never jokes, and it lands perfectly, bringing memories of the franchise’s glory days

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (2025)

StevenCsMoviesDecember 12, 2025Scott Cawthon, creator of the very popular Five Nights at Freddy’s video game franchise cowrote the first movie a couple years ago. Now with FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2, he is the sole writer. Just because you have successfully created a video game franchise doesn't mean you know how to write a decent screenplay. As someone who has never played the games and doesn’t know anything about the lore, these movies were not made with me in mind. They are for hardcore fans, and nobody else. They are filled with easter eggs and references that went over my head. I didn’t think the first movie was bad. It had cool music, competent characters, and a somewhat cohesive story. I can’t say the same for this sequel. I’ll begin with the few positives. The retro score is still pretty great. I enjoyed the new villain and their origin story in the first scene. The Marionette is a good villain who’s creepy enough to hold my attention. Unfortunately, this is where the positives end. The script is just awful. Dumb character decisions, laughable dialogue, many subplots that show their face whenever the plot needs to plod along. From a technical standpoint it does things better than the first. The animatronics themselves look really good, but it’s established that their footfalls are loud and slow. How the hell do they just appear out of nowhere? This franchise is considered to be a “gateway into horror”, where it’s mostly aimed at teenagers. They deserve to think better of what horror movies could be. Hardcore fans will enjoy the references and the characters that they already know from the video games and extensive lore, but that leaves the rest of us scratching our heads. Mckenna Grace and Skeet Ulrich are both completely wasted here and feel like they were “trailer bait”. Wayne Knight plays a character that is the biggest jerk-wad for absolutely no reason. Overall, FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2 is 2 dumb and the writing made me 2 furious to care about anything that happened. They’ve clearly set things up for another installment, and they’ve already made enough money, so I’ll see you guys for the next one. Hopefully they’ll get a competent writer.

Brave is beautiful.
And this movie? Honey, it’s bold enough to make your eyes pop out, your jaw drop, and maybe even your toes pack their bags and leave. Who knows!
For a first full-length film, newcomer Norwegian director Emilie Blichfeldt swings for the fences—and then rips the fences off entirely. It’s skinless, fearless, and fabulous in that “your ugly stepsister finally got her glow-up” kind of way.

Khen JuliaDecember 11, 2025Hunger serves up a feast for the eyes and the mind. If you’re a foodie or someone who loves digging into social issues with a side of sizzling drama, this movie is definitely worth a bite. Sure, the ending is a little undercooked, but with its gorgeous cinematography and a story that keeps you hooked like a perfectly seasoned entrée, it’s still a must-see dish on the cinematic menu. Bon appétit!

Hamnet (2025)

StevenCsMoviesDecember 11, 2025Here I thought a “hamnet” was some kind of trap for pigs. Boy was I wrong! HAMNET is actually the new movie directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao. It is adapted from the 2020 historical fiction of the same name written by Maggie O’Farell, who cowrote the film with Zhao. It tells a story of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and what could have been his inspiration to create one of the most popular plays in the history of the Globe, Hamlet. He quickly falls in love with Agnes (Jessie Buckley), who like Will, sees things differently. As Will sees things through his words on the page, Agnes sees things through nature, both of them outcasts of society. When tragedy strikes their family, both deal with their grief in different ways. This movie has moments that are hard to watch, but it’s only because the acting doesn’t feel like a performance. Utilizing close-up shots, it feels like I was in the room. Not only is Buckley going to get an award, I believe 12-year-old Jacobi Jupe as the titular character deserves something. It’s a very clever bit of casting having his older brother Noah Jupe in this as well. There were a couple of shots that left me breathless. I don’t want to say too much more about this, but I will say that art can be an opportunity for healing, and the movie has a way of depicting the spiritual power of art as a means of processing trauma. It also has an amazing score, using a rendition of the song On the Nature of Daylight. There are a few critics that have said this movie just never clicked for them emotionally. I’ve tried wrapping my head around that, to no avail. Overall, HAMNET is an extremely beautiful tragedy, an emotional masterpiece that might not click with you. Remember, keep your heart open, and bring tissues.

Lucas.December 11, 2025It's obviously heartfelt, but I felt the first two-thirds to be slog. The ending is gorgeous. Mescal is a wonder — gave me chills more than once. But he's in it less than I expected. It's very much carried by Jessie Buckley. I dunno, I was underwhelmed. It has its moments and people were SOBBING in the theatre, but it just lacked that little bit extra, that twist that would make it intriguing.

FlemishCatDecember 10, 2025Beautiful, if slightly spooky, tale of love and greed from the makers of "Madame Tutli-Putli."
Production design and music are top notch. I loved the narration, making the story a tad bit less enigmatic than some of their previous works.
It's a multiple award-winning film, here in Canada it will soon be available for streaming on nfb.ca and the NFB app.

FlemishCatDecember 10, 2025After many years, I re-watched this film again today.
The film still holds up very well. It's delightfully creepy!
It's amazing that after almost two decades, the National Film Board of Canada recently dug up four BTS clips from the archive.
In it, the artists as young men, Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, speak about their inspiration and technique of this award-winning, Oscar-nominated gem.
You can find them easily by googling "NFB blog + Tutli-Putli."
In 2025, the filmmakers (who are together known as "Clyde Henry") dropped a brand-new film, THE GIRL WHO CRIED PEARLS. Highly recommended if you like spooky over sweet animation.

FlemishCatDecember 10, 2025Watched this masterful stop-motion animation at the 2024 Vancouver Int'l Film Festival.
The story, based on a short story by Richard Van Camp, is somewhat enigmatic but the art direction and execution of the animation by Amanda Strong and her team are stunning.
The audience seemed to be genuinely intrigued and moved by the main character, Dove, and the creatures they're fighting.
It took eight years to get this gem of a film completed, and I it's nice to see the film enjoyed a wide and successful distribution. It's now streaming in Canada on nfb.ca.

Lucas.December 10, 2025Purposefully trying to trigger you and expose you to gross things. Also obsessed with itself. It has cool moments, for sure, and it is a far reach for storytelling. It helps if you understand at least some religious iconography. But what was it really saying at the end? I dunno.
