Supergirl (2026)
SStevenCsMoviesJuly 15, 2026
Director James Gunn’s DC Universe started with a bang with SUPERMAN. Now comes a movie about his cousin, SUPERGIRL, directed by Craig Gillespie. Watching her home planet Krypton get destroyed, Kara (Millie Alcock) is sent to Earth to survive. Now 23, she is living it up doing pub crawls on different planets with her Tasmanian Devil of a dog Krypto. She’s a bit of a hot mess, a little rude. She has rough edges. Despite all that, she still has a good heart. She meets Ruthye (Eve Ridley), a girl seeking revenge on the guy who murdered her family, Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts), leader of the Brigands (space pirates). When he leaves the planet, he shoots Krypto with a poison dart, leaving him with 3 days left to live. With a common enemy, Kara reluctantly teams up with Ruthye to hunt Krem down. You still following me? Good. This movie is supposedly based on the graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. I say supposedly because from what I’ve read on it, the filmmakers completely miss the mark. Even if I judge the movie on its own, I hate to say it, but it’s not good. It’s not bad either though. It’s just aggressively mediocre. The villain is narratively weak and forgettable. The two leads have no chemistry. The writing is poor, and that makes me worried because the same person is supposed to be writing the upcoming WONDER WOMAN. The music choices don’t really fit. The director completely misses the point of the journey, misconstruing the ending so hard. The backstory scenes should’ve been at the very beginning. It’s just all very disappointing and feels like wasted potential. When is Hollywood going to make a great female-led superhero movie? It seems like every time they try, it feels half-assed and half-baked. The only exception is WONDER WOMAN (2017). My problem with Hollywood is only exacerbated by the discourse online by people. The sheer misogyny and sexism. So many people just suck at being human. On a positive note, the alien designs are fun. There’s a funny voice cameo from Seth Rogen. Long-time fans have been dying to see Jason Momoa play Lobo, who is basically the Deadpool of DC. He’s in here, but just as a random cameo, popping in and out. He was born to play this role and I hope to see him again in a larger capacity. Lastly, Alcock does an amazing job as the titular character, with what she’s given. Overall, SUPERGIRL is a watered-down version of the comic it’s based on, and Alcock deserved better. If you are adapting something, always fully understand the source material. I wish I had better news.

I was surprisingly charmed by this one! This is Milos Forman's second movie, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see what the director of 'Amadeus' and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' could do under the Czech New Wave of the 1960s. A young girl - Forman's 18-year-old sister-in-law Hana Brejchová in her first film role - decides that she wants more out of life than the town and factory she lives and works in, and it has the usual consequences for her and others. We might have seen this many times before, but I like the way the director handles the problems of love, life and youth.
Enjoy!
