- In 1920s Chicago, Emilia Fairfax lives under the control of her wealthy but cruel family. When mounting debts threaten the Fairfax name, her parents make a deal with powerful gangster Viktor Kane. Emilia is handed over to Viktor, who expects her to become his wife and give him an heir. Terrified by the future planned for her, Emilia refuses to accept her role quietly. Her attempt to escape brings her into the dangerous world of Cassian Wolfe, Viktor's most valuable underground boxer and trusted man. Cassian first appears to be another part of Viktor's organization, but Emilia soon discovers that he has secrets of his own. Behind his loyalty is a painful past, a hidden agenda, and a long-running plan to bring Viktor down from inside his organization. As Emilia and Cassian grow closer, their attraction creates new risks for both of them. Their connection is complicated by distrust, different backgrounds, and the constant threat of Viktor discovering what is happening. Emilia also faces pressure from her mother Beatrice, who values the survival of the Fairfax family above her daughter's wishes, while her passive father Alistair struggles between protecting Emilia and obeying his wife. The conflict moves between Fairfax Manor, where Emilia is watched and controlled, and the Iron Chapel, Viktor's brutal underground boxing club filled with violence, criminals, and secrets. Oliver Lang, Viktor's fixer and a former military medic, also becomes involved as his real loyalties slowly become clearer. With Viktor tightening his control and Cassian's hidden plans becoming increasingly dangerous, Emilia is pulled into a struggle involving family betrayal, revenge, deception, and a growing relationship that could put them both at risk. What begins as an attempt to escape a future chosen for her becomes a much larger fight against Viktor and the violent world he has built.
