Naked (1993)

...yikes.

This one's been on my radar for quite some time. I've been aware of Mike Leigh since Hard Truths came out last year. In scouring through his filmography, this one stood out to me. A film about a dark brooding man wandering through the streets of London, pondering philosophically about life and women...interesting. Although a little skeptical, the imagery of this film caught my eye. The Cannes recognition didn't hurt either.

I'll be honest, I've been quite lost lately. I needed something the other night to match this feeling, and figured it was time to give this one a shot.....Christ. As much as I love world cinema, I have absolutely HAD IT with the number of arthouse films that centre around an aimless man who just meanders through a city preaching "phiolosophically" like an insufferable high school drama kid and has sex with any woman that passes by him. And....yeah that's this film in a nutshell.

I have a very hard time emotionally resonating with a film if I don't like the main character. Johnny is maybe the most unlikable character I've ever seen in cinema. If he isn't screaming in the streets to strangers about how "the world is ending," h'e's literally raping women. And yet, he isn't even the most disgusting character. Jeremy/Sebastian is an upper class cunt who snickers and sneers through the film like a moustache twirling villain. And when he isn't doing that, he too is literally raping women. And so the film follows these characters wreaking havoc on the people around them. It isn't funny. It isn't entertaining. It isn't deep or intellectually engaging. It's annoying and a slog to sit through.

.....And yet I can't deny there is something to this film. I admire how raw it is. It has an atmosphere to it that I find very intoxicating. Even though I don't like many of the characters, the performances are very well done (except for Greg Cruttwell as Jeremy/Sebastian/whatever the fuck his name is). The film kept me guessing as to where it was going next.

So overall, very complicated feelings about this one. In many ways, this is everything I hate about arthouse cinema rolled into one. On the other hand, I do recognize the talent behind this film. It's just a shame it has the depth of an edgy 16-year-olds journal. I may give it another chance a year or so from now to see how its held up, but this is how I feel for now.

An adaptation that was actually faithful to the source material and went above and beyond my expectations. We actually get to explore Megatron and his personality rather than just the usual "screw the Autobots"

This felt like an amateur student film. Anung Un Rama deserves better

I was hooked from the first episode. They didn't hold back the gay. And I loved it. I wanted Jonathan Bailey's character to be happy so bad. It's not too often shows are able to portray the lives of homosexual so genuinely. I never had to hide like they did so learning about this moment in history was so meaningful and let me realize the struggle of earlier gay men.

Cool premise but I would've liked to see even more gore and crazy things caused by the monkey. You don't really get a good feel for the scope of its power until the very end.

Cool body horror film. Great performances from the 2 leads. It lost points just because I was trying to figure out the logistics of the swap the entire movie and didn't think it would be practical

Kinda like The Purge but a virus instead. Nice commentary on corporations but could've been executed better.

The blueprint for all modern anime. It was also completely hand-drawn. Dedication and care really showed in the final product. Even nearly 30 years later the story is still relevant to the world. Which is unfortunate since it was a commentary on the commodification of people and the harms of tapping into shit we don't fully understand (nuclear weapons)

It's not like I cried for an hour after the movie was over or anything. So happy that Brendan Fraser got this chance for a meaningful comeback.

Proof that Zac Efron can actually act. Brilliant look into the tragic story of a wrestling family.

The continuous shot gimmick was alright. I think it ended up harming the storytelling.

This is my least favorite movie of all time. I wish I could extract this movie from my brain somehow. No one needs to watch this film ever.

It was too short for me I wanted even more fight. The pass off to Frieza mid-battle is gold (HA get it)
Black Clover (2017)

My go-to when I just want something to watch. The earlier episodes are too screamy because of Asta, but the voice actor becomes more comfortable with the role as the show goes on. I'm weird and I never like the main character of a series the most, but Asta is such a dork and such a genuinely good person.

The best anime right now in my opinion. Has everything a little weeb like me could ask for.
