under the fun, it keeps poking at love versus wealth, contentment versus comfort, and the way money gets wired into a person by the kind of parent who raises them. It rhymes with The Materialists in topic, but the deeper point is moral compatibility as a kind of private constitution: two people can want each other and still be fundamentally mismatched in what they will permit themselves to do. There is also a very modern unease running underneath, a subtle critique of the post Me Too era logic where peace is sometimes bought by ceding control to one partner and calling it enlightenment instead of surrender. The clearest takeaway is choosing your partner means choosing your ethics. You need the same type of crazy, or the relationship becomes a performance built to protect a preference instead of a truth.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die (2025)

StevenCsMoviesFebruary 24, 2026If you are eating your meal in a diner and a man bursts in looking like a hobo, claiming he’s from the future, asking you to join him in stopping A.I from taking over the world, what would you do? This is the premise of Gore Verbinski’s survival comedy GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON’T DIE. It’s written by Matthew Robinson, who wrote THE INVENTION OF LYING, which, after finding that out, makes perfect sense. Sam Rockwell plays the man from the future. He is perfectly cast, bringing us a top-notch performance. He’s a legendary scene-stealer who chews them (scenes) up and spits them out. There are quite a few flashbacks that detail each character’s backstory, which is great for character development, but it slightly loses momentum. They do eventually intertwine in a very satisfying way. This movie is wildly unpredictable, except for one reveal that I saw coming from a mile away. It must have been hard making a fun movie about a real controversial subject like A.I., but Verbinski pulls it off spectacularly. It’s a completely original story, which is rare these days. There are certain decisions made in the third act that might throw people off, but I loved the creative energy behind this whole thing. This movie acts as a warning as to where we might be heading, both technologically and as a society. This also reminded me of the movie Y2K. Some of the comedy is used to show dark truths, holding a…black mirror to our society. The ending, at least for me, gets better the more I think about it. Overall, this movie is so much fun, but it also reminds us to look up from our phones every now and then. Remember, GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON’T DIE.

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

K AugustFebruary 24, 2026You can see glimpses of the genius of Welles in this, but it is hard to watch and know that this was the masterpiece that could have been. After ''Citizen Kane'', the studios were adamant that the young director would never be given full reign over a production again (that is what happens when you make a masterpiece and the big boys can feel that they have been sent to school). Instead, he had the film taken away from him and cut up, to the point where I can feel that the holes are all too visible in the plot. The Amberson family simply cannot deal with the changes around them: the automobile; less formal arrangements between the classes; the freedom to get an education and to be responsible for oneself; the idea that money does not last. It is an enchanding ride, but you still have to wonder on how magnificent this film really could be if Welles had be left to do his work unharrassed.

GOAT (2026)

StevenCsMoviesFebruary 22, 2026In the past Sony Animation studios has made some of my favorite animated films, such as the SPIDERVERSE movies. Instead of finally completing said trilogy (come on!), they have a new sports movie called GOAT. Using their signature animation style, it’s about anthropomorphic animals who play basketball, which is called roarball here. Will (Caleb McLaughlin) is a teenage goat living in a shabby basement in Vineland who dreams of becoming the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time) of roarball. The only problem is the sheer size of the players (smalls can’t ball). After going viral in a video, he is put on Vineland’s local team the Thorns. The team itself is on the ropes, as they say. Team captain Jett (Gabrielle Union) the black panther is tired of carrying the team, which is eclectic as they come. You have Olivia (Nicola Coughlan) the ostrich with low self-esteem, Archie (David Harbour) the rhino who’s a single father of twin girls, Modo (Nick Kroll) the Komodo dragon who doesn’t whatever he wants, and Lenny (Stephen Curry) the giraffe who raps on the side. The story is very familiar, Will needing to prove himself amidst the obstacles of societal norms. You could say he needs to find the…will. I’ll show myself out. I enjoyed hearing some familiar voices too, including Andrew Santino and Bobby Lee as commentators. There are also quite a few basketball players who lend their voices too. This is just a fun colourful time at the movies. I noticed quite a few obvious “This is 3D” moments, which might bug some people. The writing is simple but full of hope and heart. Overall, GOAT isn’t quite the company’s G.O.A.T, but its unique characters, exceedingly positive message, and gorgeous animation, make this an easy lay-up of a movie. Okay, I’ll go. Remember, dream big.

Crime 101 (2026)

StevenCsMoviesFebruary 22, 2026When is enough truly enough? Contrary to my belief, CRIME 101 is not a class or textbook of how to do crime, but the name of a new crime thriller written and directed by Bart Layton. Based on a novella by Don Winslow, this is a heist movie that knows what it’s doing. Mike (Chris Hemsworth) is a gentlemanly, meticulous jewel thief who works for Money (Nick Nolte), the object and the guy. Another guy who works for him is Ormon (Barry Keoghan), a psychotic biker wildcard. Sharon (Halle Berry) is an insurance broker who is striving for a promotion that keeps getting out of reach. Lou (Mark Ruffalo) is a detective who’s convinced these robberies on the 101 highway are connected. He’s also going through a divorce with Angie (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Maya (Monica Barbarro) is Mike’s love interest, who tends to ignore a few too many red flags (I’d probably ignore them too if it was Hemsworth). This movie is great at just letting these fully established characters play in the playground that is Los Angeles. They each have clear motives and talented actors giving it their all. This movie dives deep into the theme of class, how money has a real influence on how you live your life and your morality. This is a throwback to movies like HEAT. As in most movies with Barry Keoghan, he is a wildcard wrench in the gears in the most exciting way possible. I was invested in the drama of these characters’ lives. There are great chase sequences and very tense scenes. Ruffalo plays a very similar role in this as he did in the series TASK. I really enjoyed how smoothly we would transition from character to character. It might be a little too long for some, but I was just happy being driven as a passenger for as long as they had me. This movie cost too much money, so people will probably call it a flop, which is sad. Overall, CRIME 101 is a slick, entertaining drive around Los Angeles that accelerates faster and faster as it goes on. I highly recommend getting in this ride. Just remember your seatbelt.

Lucas.February 20, 2026Anthony Hopkins masterclass, for sure. But it feels dated in a bit toothless with how it approaches its historical storyline. It's at its best when it focuses on the Hopkins character's emotionless state. Some beautiful cinematography, so it's an stunning watch visually. Plus there's a young Hugh Grant that is a bit of a scene stealer. Cool movie if you're in the mood for a "stuffy" period piece.

Lucas.February 19, 2026An action-packed and fun ride with lots of twists. The car action is great. It's also loaded with strong actors. The female characters are woefully underwritten and the dialogue in general is where the film faulters. But what it has is a really great premise and pacing. It has a worthwhile, overarching story to tell, so the small bits that are cliche are forgivable. The final climax is super tense and masterfully teased. Type of movie you'd watch with your dad.
