The Stunt Man (1980)

K AugustApril 16, 2026An odd creation, but one that I am going to meditate on for some time. A Vietnam veteran (Steve Railsback) on the run from the police stumbles onto a film set and ends up working as a stunt man for a director (played by Peter O'Toole in a brilliant performance) and hiding from his problems...or does he? It is never clear what is truth and what is just the meglomaniacal insanity of the director and his crew (Barbara Hershey is in a key role here). I really cannot think of another film so deeply committed to the idea that you can never trust what you see when the director yells 'Action!,' at least from the 1980s. It now seems that many directors have learned the lessons here and we all wonder if things are real or just the fake out of a talented creator with the right equipment.
Watch it and understand what we have become.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 14, 2026One of the best films of the 90s in my opinion. Edward Norton should’ve won the Oscar for his frighteningly complex role. This film captures your attention from start to finish.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 14, 2026A gloomy and deep portrait of a lost soul who is damned to live a life not fully chosen. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt deliver great performances as two characters who are the total opposite of each other. The makeup, hair, clothing and art direction also deserve high praise.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 14, 2026Tom Hanks is as charismatic as ever in this one. While the story may not me perfect, its message remains ageless and universal, that growing up doesn’t mean to leave your inner circle behind and learn to live life to the fullest.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 14, 2026I was expecting a more engaging story coming from an actor such as Jeff Bridges, but his performance, as well as Edward Furlong’s, is what gives the film its essence as it deals with some pretty rough themes.

Lucas.April 14, 2026Straightforward but still pretty innovative. The story is well rounded and thought-out. Fun to watch. Cool explosions. Lots of gun violence.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 11, 2026As incredible as it may seem, I found this remake much more pleasing than the one made in the 1960s. The cast is the high point of this one and despite the exaggerated use of special effects, it still manages to tell a story compelling enough, even with some holes in the screenplay.

The Haunting (1963)

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 11, 2026A little too slow for my taste. The black and white coloring gives the film an interesting aesthetic and the actors give convincing performances, but it lacks the horror elements it proposes.

K AugustApril 10, 2026I have no qualms giving this a ten-star review! It is, simply, the best Shakespearean adaptation ever made to use none of the bard's language. I watched this as a student, then as an graduate student who used it as a means to comment on Japan and Shakespeare's influence on the culture and arts. And now I watch it as someone who has been to Japan, seen both kabuki and noh theatre up close, and wondered just how Akira Kurosawa created this steady and beautiful epic.
Please watch and never forget it!

The Drama (2026)

Lucas.April 9, 2026
Lucas.April 9, 2026This is a pretty great and fun romantic-comedy-drama. It's not the same, but it reminded me of After the Hunt and Materialists... I think it fits somewhere between those two. Pattinson and Zendaya are great. Nice to see Pattinson act in his natural accent. Sometimes, however, the "drama" felt a little one note. They do push it into character-study territory and it is quite psychological/Freudian. I just wish the plot was a bit more dynamic.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 8, 2026This is an enjoyable one, though I prefer Tim Burton’s version. It’s interesting when I watch this one because the style and atmosphere is much lighter than the 2005 remake and has a completely different proposal when it gives a more charming 70s feel musical piece.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 8, 2026This movie is a pure trip down memory lane, though I didn’t always enjoy it. The first time I watched I remember being kind of scared at its odd characters and wacky characters, but now this is my favored adaptation of Ronald Dahl’s novel, which was read to me a long time ago in school.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 8, 2026
Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 8, 2026The story is compelling and the characters are driven, but I was expecting a bit more of action or disastrous sequences. Although, the scenes which rely on special effects are quite good considering the 2 hour long duration. This film gave more an impression of a drama rather than a survival sci-fi, which is why maybe it could be half an hour shorter.

Cinéfila ConsumidoraApril 8, 2026I had watched this one before, but it gave one of those feel good sensations watching it once more. It relies purely on simplicity, but those kinds of stories that bring friendships between people and animals are often the ones that I enjoy the most. A fun-loving film!
