"Literature is a great source of nourishment for an actor, just like music, but literature in particular. It provides subtext, broadens their vision of characters, and serves as a mirror. These are closely connected professions." Fernanda Torres is a Brazilian writer and actress known for her work in film, theater, and television. Daughter of the renowned actress Fernanda Montenegro and the actor Fernando Torres, she was immersed in the world of art and acting from an early age. At thirteen, she joined the O Tablado Theater School in Rio de Janeiro, making her stage debut in 1978 with the play Um Tango Argentino. She made her film debut with Innocence (1983) and went on to build her career with films such as The Weak Flesh (1985), I Know I Will Love You (1986)—for which she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival—and A Man’s War (1991), among others. In 1998, she starred in Twins and, in 2005, she co-starred alongside her mother in House of Sand, both directed by Andrucha Waddington, her husband. In 2024, her performance in Still Here earned her an Academy Award nomination and the Golden Globe for Best Actress. With a career spanning films, theather and literature she has solidified her status as a key figure in contemporary Brazilian culture.
