This is a film best appreciated alone in the dead of night. Halfway through, it seems like a movie about religion and war. But by the end, the revelation is rather shocking for me - more than religion and war, it tells the absurdly tragic life story of a woman set against a backdrop of war.

Content-wise, "Incendies" can be classified as an anti-war film. In terms of narrative, it's a detective or mystery film. To make it a mystery, the film avoids a straightforward narrative, instead weaving three storylines together. Jeanne and Simon’s journey to uncover the truth contrasts with Nawal’s storyline, which reveals it. The film seamlessly transitions between these interconnected stories, making it gripping and cohesive.

I'm not really into this fast-paced, straightforward way of storytelling. The individual scenes are creative but don't delve deep enough into the characters' emotions. The siblings' journey to unravel mysteries seems more like a build-up to a dramatic ending, and the whole process feels a bit mundane. However, thankfully, we can still admire the director's distinct visual style that stands out in this story.

The way this movie tells two stories from different periods but intertwines is done well. Plus, it doesn't go overboard trying to show the brutality of war and trying to manipulate our feelings. The director has a great handle on expressing emotions just the right way. The ending is food for thought: even though war destroys homes, the bonds of love and family remain unbreakable. It tells us that only by going through the trials of history can we find the path to rebuilding. Overall, the film's intensity falls slightly short compared to "Waltz with Bashir." I'd give it a 9 out of 10.

A single gunshot tore apart a once-happy family, and war devastated an unsuspecting city. It's like watching a modern-day Oedipus tragedy unfold, where each person has to come to terms with their inner turmoil and consequences. The movie ends with the letters, downplaying the immense tragedy but leaving an indelible mark on every viewer's soul. I really liked this war film. Even though I kind of knew the ending, it still affected me a lot. It profoundly impacted me, even though I predicted the ending. It felt like this colossal force guided me toward the truth I was searching for, yet having the courage to uncover it proved to be the most challenging part.

I love this movie. It tells the story with a dual narrative structure in a really gentle way, slowly building up the emotions until it hits you with this stunning ending. Even though it touches on heavy topics like religion, politics, the military, and terrorism, it's all centered around this one person—a mom who lived an ordinary life. The storytelling is controlled and understated, but there's this intense emotional core that just explodes in the last moment. It truly leaves the audience in awe and completely wrapped up in this rollercoaster of emotions.

Another movie from Villeneuve about violence that gave me a visceral reaction while watching. That one scene involving a math question... Oh my god, it left me on the verge of panicking.
