Who knew having opposable thumbs could be so scary? Usually, January has been known to be a dumping ground for not-the-best movies. Of course, there are some exceptions. The new horror PRIMATE might be one of these for you. Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah) comes home from college to her sister Erin (Gia Hunter), their father Adam (Troy Kotsur), and their friends. Another member of the family is Ben (Miguel Torres Umba), a very smart chimpanzee. When Ben gets bit, he begins to lose himself, leading to a terrifying tale of survival in a big, beautiful glass cliffside mansion. They get stuck between a chimp and a hard place. This is director Johannes Roberts’ best film to date, which honestly isn’t saying much. The plot is super simple, as is the character development. There are plenty of horror tropes that they actually lean into for humour. I would’ve liked more humour overall though. What I really enjoyed were the visual effects on display here. While the chimp was a combination of both practical and CGI, the gore was all practical, which looked great. This is a very violent movie. They do a good job showing just how powerful and brutal chimps can be. With a pretty solid pace, the tension is palpable for most of the 90-minute runtime. These are smarter than the average slasher characters. The use of silence and sign language is utilized very well here, especially with the addition of Kotsur. Happy he’s getting work after his award-winning role in CODA. I was quite entertained. Overall, PRIMATE is prime serviceable simian silliness, a movie that knows exactly what it is, and what the audience is there for. If you’re a sick freak like me and love violence in movies, I recommend it!

Gore palpitante, voraz, grotesca y aberrante. Definitivamente vale la pena.
