The Odyssey...or the Idiodicy?

Okay, I'm going to weigh in on this one…

The Odyssey' Is Almost Here, and the Cast is Insanely Stacked | GQ

There has been a lot of talk online about Christopher Nolan's take on the Homer epic, and I think that it is destined to fail at to box office, but I would like to hear how you feel about this one. Is it necessary to always follow particular aesthetic rules when filmmaking? Should Helen of Troy always be played by a Greek? Should we just stick with the text?

Let me know your thoughts…

I always come with the perspective that if the cast is super star-studded, the narrative's going to not be that good-- this whole movie is being sold mainly by it's cast, which I feel like is an indication that it's going to flop. But who knows? Maybe it'll surprise us.

I think Christopher Nolan has finally crossed the rubicon of fame. There's a tipping point where someone becomes so famous or big that the internet will turn against them, and start discounting their hard work. With the success of Oppenheimer, I think Nolan crossed that threshold and now it's cool to dislike him. Personally, I'm pumped for The Odyssey. I'll be there in Dolby Vision opening night.

A lot of people seem to want this movie to fail. They shit on the trailers, on the armours, on the "My dad is coming", etc. Now, the big thing is the casting, and that inevitably became another stage of the internet culture wars. So people who have never read the book, who know nothing about it, who don't even care about it, are arguing for or against casting Lupita Nyong'o.
Also, how faithful do you have to be to the text? Should the actors be Greek? If so, should they speak Greek? Should it all be performed in dactylic hexameter?
Not only that, some of the concepts that would have been pretty important for Greek audiences in 800BC will absolutely need to be changed for the adaptation. As in, whatever version of Odysseus we get will have very little to do with the one from the text, in terms of morals and ideas and all that stuff. The plot might be similar, and he'll be nostalgic about Ithaca and whatever, but it won't be the same character, simply because there's a couple thousand years setting them apart. But I think it will be an ok movie, fun and cool, but mid.

I think Nolan has established himself as a too big to fail kind of director. However, if this movie gets bad reviews then it might stop it from being the blockbuster that Oppenheimer was. I don't really care about the casting choices -- im a big believer in creative license. From the sneak peak I saw of this film, I think it looks awesome. Although I've been avoiding the latest trailer because I heard a lot of people pan it.
