VIFF Day 1 Recap

There was rain, there was wine and there were movies!

Day 1 in the books, and it was a verrry busy one. Here are some quick thoughts on the three I caught:

It Was Just An Accident

A fantastic way to open the fest. The drama managed to me heartbreaking, funny, exciting and thought provoking all at once. If this isn't at least nominated for Best Foregn Feature I don't know what's going on. Strongly recommend.

Orwell: 2+2=5

This may have been the most depressing doc I've seen, but the longer I sit with it, the more I sour on it. As much as the message hit home, directly in the gut, Orwell isn't saying anything new. After a while it starts to feel like a slideshow of human misery 1930 to present. Is it's message important? Yes. Does that make it a great film? No.

Nouvelle Vague

A more perfectly-tailored festivel opener, you will not find. This movie is just as obsessed with cinema as everyone in the audience was, myself included. It was charming and funny, if a bit too long. If you love movies and the history of cinema, you will have an absolute blast. If you don't…. well, at least the performances are fantastic. Especially Aubry Dullin and Guillaume Marbeck.

It Was Just An Accident is my absolute favourite movie at the moment. Whoever hasn't watched it, should!

After reading this, I think I'll watch Orwell: 2+2=5 later and not hurry to watch it during the festival!

I know Nouvelle Vague would be cool, but it just doesn't appeal to me. It Was Just an Accident is probably amazing, so I'll definitely watch that

Nouvelle Vague was great! I'm still hoping to catch a screening of It Was Just An Accident
