A powerhouse. Authoritarianism is a sickness where every contributor to the system is a cancerous cell, endlessly replicating itself by spreading the same insidious violence that its victims will inevitably end up mirroring. Panahi’s portrayal of the banality of evil doesn’t feel didactic or detached, it feels deeply and horrifyingly human. This is one I’ll definitely want to re-visit at some point, and something tells me that it’ll only get better as I let it simmer in my memory until then.

This is Waiting For Godot but Iranian. So well written! The actors gave their all and you can tell! This is heartbreaking, funny, and perfectly planned. The engine stalling scene got me; it was subtle and natural to the context of the movie. Also, musing over the morality of hurting someone who tortured you while also having no idea what you're doing? This movie had my entire attention from beginning to end! Everyone needs to go see this at least once!

It opens and closes strong, but I struggled to connect with the road in-between. I felt detached from the characters, and even when they are speaking of horrific things, their delivery comes off as one-note. Some comedic moments work, but overall the mix of tones was uncomfortable to me.
