La casta samurái ha sido abolida y quienes no se hayan adaptado están en vías de desaparecer. Shujiro Saga, un antiguo samurái y asesino político (hitokiri) que se ha prohibido matar, debe desempolvar su espada para luchar una vez más en un torneo cuyo premio le permitirá salvar a su esposa y a toda su aldea de una epidemia de cólera. Pero tanto él como los otros participantes, descubren que el torneo es en realidad un juego cruel y sádico, una “battle royale” donde solo uno de ellos puede quedar con vida.
