La Brea is said to be a mishmash of the network's own Manifest, the German series Dark, Lost from two decades ago, and Primeval from over a decade ago. A temporal rift separates a family and placed them in two eras, with the father and daughter struggling to find each other in the civilized world, while the mother and son fight for their survival in prehistoric wilderness.

Sci-fi dramas from public broadcasters often suffer from many issues, including scripts that fall short of contemporary standards, stereotypical character setups, and vague themes. Furthermore, the acting is subpar, and the actress playing the daughter is exceptionally poor. The special effects are also lacking, and the series relies heavily on cliffhangers so that it can be renewed for a new season, but it fails to resolve these mysteries satisfactorily. This pattern might explain why previous sci-fi shows on public broadcasters were often canceled after just one season.

What's up with this show? The ending felt super rushed, almost like they were just reading the story synopsis to us… And can we discuss how the pacing was off between the final season's first and second halves? Are they trying to pull a fast one on us? I mean, seriously, the idea of time travel to prehistoric times has so much potential—ancient creatures, conspiracies, time travel itself—there are tons of cool elements to dive into, from ancient invasions to a whole new prehistoric era. How did they manage to make such exciting material feel so dull? Kudos. My heart goes out to the actors.

The first season was so mind-blowing that I binged the whole thing and was totally hooked. But then, the second season? Major disappointment. Seriously, what's happening here? The storyline is a mess, with multiple dull and uninteresting plotlines, lacking any charismatic characters to keep me invested. The main character's wishy-washy love triangle is beyond frustrating. I pushed through it on and off for two months just to reach the ninth episode. I don't want to quit, but it's gotten so bland.

You know, you can stick with a show even if some episodes have dull plots as long as the suspense keeps you hooked. This one falls into that category. It seems that NBC quite like this type of show, with solid setups, gripping suspense in every episode, a developing storyline, intricate family dynamics, and a mix of other group scenes. When I think about shows like "Blindspot" and “Revolution" that NBC has done in the past, I feel like I may have cracked the code on how NBC secures commercial success by giving the green light to these projects.

This show is full of flaws. For starters, the storyline feels outdated and entirely out of sync with the times, with a theme all over the place. The characters are too stereotypical, and the acting is just terrible, especially the performance of the actress who plays the daughter. And those special effects? They look cheap. The creators of the show love to sprinkle in suspense and plot twists to keep viewers hooked, but they never bother to clarify things. Despite having high ratings in the past and still doing well commercially, the show is plagued with issues, and the outlook could have been better.
