- Storyline
- Life plays a very cruel trick on Laurita Arteaga. Born to loving, wealthy parents, she is separated from them while still a baby and forced to live in poverty for many years, never knowing her true identity. The person to blame for this tragic turn of events in Laurita's life is Luis Felipe Montesinos, a greedy and evil man, who works for Laurita's father, Eugenio Arteaga. The profound envy he feels for everything that is good in Arteaga's life -his successful company, his fortune, his young and beautiful wife- drives Montesinos to devise a wicked scheme to ruin Arteaga and take over his assets. With cold premeditation, Montesinos carries out each step of his malicious plan. First he deprives Arteaga of all his assets by using his genius for finance and fraud. Then he murders Arteaga's wife, Laura, taking careful measures to make sure that the blame is placed entirely on Eugenio. And so, now a helpless victim of whom he considered his loyal friend and employee, Arteaga is sentenced to 30 years in prison. The fateful afternoon of Laura Arteaga's murder, Laurita's nursemaid arrives at the house at the precise moment when the crime is taking place. Terrified for her life, she flees with the baby-a decision that brings her terrible consequences, since Montesinos follows her in his car and hits her, leaving her in a near vegetative state. This way, he makes sure that she will be unable to reveal that he is the real killer. Hours later, Laurita and the nursemaid are found by the latter's mother, Doña Coromoto, a crass and obnoxious woman who makes a meager living selling scraps. With her mother dead and her father in prison, Laurita grows up with Doña Coromoto, who exploits her from a very early age, sending her off to sell newspapers and gather scraps. In the slums where they live, Laurita is known as "the rag doll," a nickname given to her by heartless neighbors who envy her beauty and noble heart. Years later, destiny puts Laurita face to face with those who harmed her most, when she fortuitously meets Luis Felipe Montesinos' oldest son, Alejandro. In spite of the social differences between them, they fall in love-and once again, the Montesino family brings profound heartache to this young woman, this time by separating her from the man she loves. But fate will give her a chance for revenge when her father is finally exonerated and returns determined to win back everything that was so mercilessly taken from him, including his beloved daughter. Only then, free of the past, will Laurita be able to find happiness with Alejandro.
