The Goodwill Games were a series of international competitions similar in scale to the Olympic Games and conceived as an alternative during the Olympic boycott. Held every four years, they were initiated by sports organizations, business circles, and the public in the United States and participating countries. The best athletes from the USSR and the USA competed in a major multi-sport event. Unlike other major competitions, participation in the Games required only an invitation from the organizers.
