Reacher (2022)★ 8.1/10

This compelling hard-boiled detective series features the protagonist Jack Reacher, a towering figure with exceptional intelligence and combat skills, embodying the 'strong, silent type' that I find very appealing.

I'm hooked on this series. The TV adaptation stays truer to the book as compared to the film version, with Jack Reacher embodying the perfect hard-boiled detective protagonist who's unflinching and lethal when necessary.

It's already the second season and the screenwriters still refuse to change their approach. The original author, Child himself, is also the screenwriter, and his works already evoke strong imagery. In a way, it's as if he's crafting the novels in the form of a script, and since the novels are in the style of Western films, it's puzzling why the screenwriters for this series continue to merely copy straight from the novel for this TV adaptation, where the process of deduction and narration and the entire plot are only moved forward by the actors' lines. As a result, the group of highly intelligent elite military characters comes across as more like a group of boy scouts at summer camp.

A++. As a fan of the original work, I am thoroughly satisfied. The plot is nearly identical to the original novel, and the characters' appearances and personalities stay true to the source material. Tom Cruise's version is also impressive, though he doesn't fit the novel's description of Reacher, he captures the essence and spirit of the character. The depiction of the characters' appearances and demeanor in the series is just right.

The story is good, it's just rather boring. The problem is not with the suspense or deductive reasoning, but the fact that the director has made a literary thriller out of an action thriller, with too much time spent on inner drama. The action sequences are too few and not exciting enough, making this commercial movie seem a bit cheesy and difficult for audiences to get the excitement they paid for.

Many action movies of today have lackluster plots, but this movie has a decent story, styled somewhat like an old-school suspense-mystery movie. But the movie is paced slow, the narrative draggy, and the characterizations one-dimensional.

From the small town police to the countryside capitalist, and then to revealing the real murderer, the case is progressive, methodical and fast-paced; the action scenes are swift and deadly, but also harsh and brutal. It's completely masculine in that 80's and 90's kind of way, with an old-school action movie style.
