He began his career in theater with the Provincetown Players and the Seattle Repertory Theatre before making his film debut in Report to the Commissioner (1975). Gere gained prominence with his roles in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and became a sex symbol with Days of Heaven (1978) and American Gigolo (1980). His career solidified with An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), a major box office success, and he later achieved significant acclaim with Pretty Woman (1990), opposite Julia Roberts. Gere's notable performances include Primal Fear (1996), Chicago (2002), and The Hoax (2006). He also starred in I'm Not There (2007) and had a successful reunion with Diane Lane in Nights in Rodanthe (2008). His more recent work includes Arbitrage (2012), The Benefactor (2015), and Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer (2016). Gere is also known for his humanitarian efforts, particularly his advocacy for Tibetan independence and his work with the Dalai Lama.
