“If more stories are told about marginalized communities, subcultures, and minorities, the less marginalized they will be.” Sean Baker is an American film director, screenwriter, and editor, recognized within independent cinema for his ability to portray marginalized communities with authenticity and sensitivity. He studied film at New York University and, two years after graduating, made his directorial debut with Four Letter Words (2000). His career gained momentum with Prince of Broadway (2008) and Starlet (2012), but he achieved greater recognition with Tangerine (2015), shot entirely on an iPhone. In 2017, he released The Florida Project, which was critically acclaimed and earned Willem Dafoe an Academy Award nomination. In 2024, he premiered Anora, a film that won multiple awards at the most prestigious festivals and secured five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Committed to the spirit of independent cinema, Baker, in addition to his work in film, has directed series and explored various forms of storytelling with a realistic approach to social issues.
