Born in Rome, he began his career in 1973 with short films, and his first feature film, Io sono un autarchico, was released in 1976. Throughout his career, Moretti has explored politics and personal life in his films, winning awards such as the Silver Lion at Venice and the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In 1987 he founded Sacher Film, a production company dedicated to committed cinema. His filmography includes emblematic titles such as Caro diario and La habitación del hijo.
