Regarded as the greatest football player produced by Wales, his career started by starring for second division Leeds United, at both center half and center forward, for ten years and leading the first division in 1956 when Leeds was promoted. He was transfered to Juventus in Turin for a then record sum where he led the league his new team to the championship and was voted footballer of the year. In 1958 he led his national team to the quarter finals in the World Cup with a injury making him miss the 1-0 loss to the eventual winner Brazil producing the eternal might-have-been to Welsh Football. His appearance in the film Idoli controluce (1965) was one of the perks associated with playing for the Italian club owned by the Fiat family.
