Peter Thomson won the British Open six times. Thomson won the New Zealand Open nine times between 1950 and 1971, and the Australian Open three times. Thomson competed on the international golf tour and won a number of other open titles. However, his sole PGA victory came at the Texas International Open. He retired in 1979, but he later competed on the Senior PGA Tour, where his nine victories in 1985 set a record for the most in a single season. Thomson, dubbed a "thinking man's golfer," was recognized for his quick and economical style of play. Thomson, who was instrumental in developing a Far Eastern professional golf tour, was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1980. He co-authored This Wonderful World of Golf with Desmond Zwar and also wrote a newspaper column. From 1962 to 1994, he was president of the Australian PGA and developed various golf courses. Thomson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988.
