Storyline

João, an actress from Lisbon, stars in a biographical film about Liberada, a gender-nonconforming young person persecuted by the Inquisition in 18th-century Portugal. Although the film’s director seems inclined to focus on depicting violence and suffering, Liberada’s story is ultimately one of strength, resilience, and rebellion against imposed gender roles. João clashes with the director over how to portray Liberada’s legacy. These tensions deepen as Liberada’s ghost begins to haunt João in her dreams.
