Grandpa is dead, and the whole family is gathered in his home in the country. While the adults are in the living room talking to grandma, the cousins Janus and Minna are out playing by the lake. Here they fantasize about death. Minna's mother said that when you die, your heart flies up into the sky and becomes a new person. The children explore this further when they find a dead salamander and bury it at the foot of a large tree.
