The director’s screenplay is a masterclass in solid craftsmanship, brimming with rich, nuanced layers—never slipping into melodrama. There’s always a clever hook that draws me in, peeling back one layer after another until it strikes straight at my heart. It brilliantly overturns traditional plot clichés.

This film tells the story of two patients with memory disorders redeeming one another. By confining them to tight spaces, it fosters an intense intimacy, and Jessica Chastain delivers a stellar performance. From the ruthless chill of New Order to the tender caution of Memory, I can’t help but wonder what Michel Franco has been through.

The female lead’s childhood trauma continues to haunt her as an adult, while the male lead’s Alzheimer’s leaves his memory fragmented. One desperately wants to forget but remembers vividly; the other wishes to remember but cannot. Their bond is touching, though the depiction of their relationship feels somewhat flat, lacking dramatic tension.

The screenplay is excellent. Though the story is simple, it’s filled with suspense and dramatic tension. From the outset, the characters’ actions carry hints of mystery, gradually revealing the reasons behind their peculiar behavior. The minimalist narrative avoids devolving into a clichéd romance, instead delivering a poignant warmth that transcends love through its well-crafted characters.

The director is so good at writing scripts. The story has been layered so richly and subtly, which is not sappy at all, and there is always a hook that draws you in. As the plot progresses, the story is peeled back layer by layer, and then finally reveals its core and touches our hearts. The director is also very good at casting actors, and each character's acting is organic, touching and convincing. I could barely hold back my tears at the end.

Peter Sarsgaard plays a fairly flat character, and the character itself is rarely able to give the actor room to shine. In fact, the entire film has a tendency to be a bit of a "topic-first, character-symbolizing" film.
