I dropped out of university six months after I got in. I hated every moment I spent studying Law. When I finally told my mum I wasn’t going to show up to my last final (I had failed the other two), she got very mad, she screamed at me and I just cried (I can’t stand up to my parents, even though I’m a grown ass woman) and then I called my grandma and went to live with her for two weeks. My mom didn’t talk to me for those two weeks I wasn’t there. I hated my mom when I was like 14-15 and going through the roughest patch in my depression, and then one day you just click and understand that life is shit and your mom does the best she can. I didn’t hate her when she screamed at me or even when she wouldn’t talk to me, how could I? She just thought I wasn’t being the best version of myself.

Mother-daughter relationships are so complicated that it’s rare to see them portrayed sincerely in movies. Even rarer to see them be executed so perfectly. This movie sold it to me in the first thrift store scene, when it seems like a fight that’s going to escalate and then the mom takes out a dress and the fight disappears just like that. It’s the truest portrayal of mother-daughter I’ve ever seen.

It’s also rare to see a film that ends where the protagonist wants. Most of the times we’d see that her mother was right all along, that she should’ve stayed in Sacramento because family is important, and that’s what it means to grow up, to realise that she knows what you actually wanted and needed. Sometimes moms are wrong. Sometimes you just gotta do what you want to do to find the best version of yourself.

It’s a film that feels as if it was made for me. And I’m glad I waited to see it. Now I’m working, I’m studying what I wanted to study, and my relationship with my mother finally seems like something sustainable. It’s a film that fills me with warmth because I went through that, and I made it to the other side.

A great coming-of-age movie. Saoirsie is a revelation. And the story is so true and heartfelt. Greta Gerwig tells an amazing and relatable story. Lucas Hedges and Chalamet are both great. Definitely a fun, cool movie that you can enjoy with the whole family, I think,

It exudes the same vibe as "Frances Ha," which is essentially a charming urban indie film. It places a strong-willed female character in a conservative small town, making her rebellious youth even more impactful. These films often triumph by authentically portraying their characters’ personalities. Rather than focusing on events, it delves into the protagonist’s state of mind and life stage, touching upon themes of family, love, friendship, and the notion of home.

This is, in my opinion, the best coming-of-age film in recent years, with Saoirse Ronan delivering her best performance yet. The screenplay is smart, avoiding unnecessary expansions while perfectly capturing the intended themes. The additional ten minutes toward the end might feel redundant to some but it further emphasizes the film's core message. Personally, I found it a thoughtful inclusion.

Despite fitting into the formulaic mold of clichéd American indie dramas and offering a trope-filled perspective on the generic coming-of-age story of typical American youth, director Greta Gerwig excels. Her wealth of acting experience allows her to bring excellent pacing to the performances and provide solid direction to the actors. She also makes effective use of visual elements.

Greta achieved a remarkable directorial debut in her preferred genre. This simple, heartwarming piece navigates between family, love, and friendship without ever deviating from the complex (and eternal) question of growing up. The film is like a jewelry box, encompassing the most endearing and talented young actors, making it instantly genuine and vibrant.

It's much like Frances Ha, and is fundamentally an urbane, artsy indie flick. It places a strong-willed female character in a conservative small town. The protagonist's rebellious nature in her youth is easily relatable, and characters in such films often shine due to their authentic personalities. It's not about the plot but more about the characters' thoughts and feelings at a certain age regarding family, love, friendship, sex, and their hometown.

My favorite scene is when Christine paints over the walls of her room before leaving Sacramento. It feels like a farewell to her childhood and adolescence, a ritual marking her transition into adulthood and departure from home, erasing all hermemories prior to turning 18. Yet, as we grow older, we realize that nothing is more precious than youth.

The difficulties of being a teenager

Not all mother-daughter relationships are a bed of roses but, at the end of the day, it cannot be denied that is one of the most powerful relationships ever. "Lady Bird" has an honest story told with performances out of this world.
