Cara_MooneyJune 26, 2025Based on real events, Amistad recounts a pivotal legal battle before the Civil War. As the Africans stand trial in a foreign land, judged by people who neither speak their language nor share their culture, the film evokes a profound sense of helplessness. Each character represents a different facet of society—pro-slavery, abolitionist, judicial idealist—foreshadowing the ideological clash that would erupt in the Civil War.

Scott_HuberJune 23, 2025Amistad reminds us that the judiciary is the final guardian of justice, even when the law is flawed, the system oppressive, or when society is prejudiced. With the help of abolitionists and legal advocates, the enslaved Africans eventually find justice. Still, it’s a missed opportunity that the film focuses solely on John Quincy Adams’ eloquence, without showing the courage of the justices who ruled against Southern interests.
