It still works; it still inspires...
I know that it has been more than sixty years since "Breathless" was released and changed the game forever. I know that for many die-hard Nouvelle Vague fans, Godard never improved on this very loose story of a gangster on the run. And I know that it has been copied, mined for ideas and meaning, and was a perfect accident of budget shaping content (the cutting was radical and necessary to keep things under budget).
But it is such an incredible ride.
See it. Learn from it. Understand why this was such a shock in an age of Panovision and Cinemascope in Hollywood films.
It still rocks!

While Breathless may not represent the kind of cinema Godard later stood for—it was a film he eventually distanced himself from—it remains a pure expression of New Wave ideology: irreverent, nihilistic, and radically experimental. The legendary jump cuts weren’t pre-planned but born of necessity when film stock ran low, a moment of accident that became cinematic revolution.

Godard’s debut and a defining work of the French New Wave, Breathless revolutionized cinema with its jump cuts, upending the continuity editing of classical Hollywood. The extended 23-minute hotel room sequence and fatalistic ending aren’t just stylish—they evoke the existential void at the heart of the film. Between sadness and nothingness, Godard chooses nothingness.
