Dimas_DESIDÉRIOMarch 21, 2024This Korean director demonstrates remarkable skill. Years ago, his visually striking short films and wild imagination impressed the audience at the Beijing Film Academy's International Student Film and Video Festival. Following The Chaser, he presents this peculiar film. Its only flaw lies in its overly elusive message, preventing it from achieving full marks.

melody30March 21, 2024South Korean cinema has turned murder mystery thrillers into a genre, yet it manages to elevate the genre further by incorporating exorcisms and supernatural battles, a blend once mastered by Hong Kong cinema and now emulated by others. The riveting parallel editing between the midsection supernatural battles and the climactic finale is masterful. The only drawback perhaps lies in the excessive mixing of elements and genres, leading to a less straightforward narrative.

AllAboutCartoonsMarch 21, 2024The brilliance of The Wailing lies in its ability to shatter the audience's inherent positioning of themselves as omniscient observers. It guides you to go with the flow, to scratch your head in bewilderment, until you're completely disarmed and surrender. It's an experience, a psychological and sensory rollercoaster ride. The anxiety of not knowing the truth far surpasses the allure of unraveling it. Do you believe that everything has a truth? In reality, what you believe is what you see.

71flashlightMarch 21, 2024Na Hong-jin's feature-length debut exhibits a remarkably solid screenplay but also leaves one seething with frustration. If Memories of Murder exudes a lingering melancholy, then The Chaser embodies despair. Beneath the deliberate subversion of genre tropes lies the narrative finesse reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's mastery. Despite the glaring flaws in logic, Na Hong-jin's visual and auditory acumen shines through, especially in scenes like the little girl crying in the car, where the sound of rain substitutes for dialogue, and the multi-angle editing effectively conveys the emotions.

MiniCarloMarch 21, 2024Na Hong-jin's stunning debut carries on the fine tradition of Korean cinema in portraying corrupt police and government institutions. Ha Jung-woo showcases exceptional talent, embodying the impotent serial killer with remarkable depth. The film transcends the conventions of classic crime thriller narratives with its swift capture of the killer, two unexpected climaxes, and a bleak conclusion. The scene at the convenience store, accentuated by a slow-motion blood splatter, is both despairing and tragic. However, the film is marred by numerous coincidences and plot holes.

Antonia JeamesMarch 21, 2024A heart-wrenching film that leaves one feeling desolate. It had me gripping the edge of my seat with my heart pounding. It's a damning portrayal of incompetence and decay within the entire judicial and administrative system. A despised "pimp" turns out to be the most dedicated and compassionate character. Amidst repeated confrontations between the pursuer and the criminal, the police repeatedly fumbles and fails. One expects the pursuer to rescue Mi-jin, but he arrives too late, a starkly realistic turn that intensifies the heartache.
