Alfonso Cuarón’s long takes combine technical prowess, narrative function, and directorial style - further enhanced by IMAX 3D - to give the audience a weightless sensation as if drifting in space simply through visuals. It’s a near-perfect technical achievement in Hollywood commercial cinema. The story of a female astronaut’s survival is rooted in reality, and coupled with the standard commercial film plot structure, the film is perfection.

The film’s technical aspects blew me away. The cinematography, sound editing, and mixing are impeccable. The most primal and intense human emotion is fear, particularly fear of the unknown. The vast emptiness of space epitomizes this fear, which made me vulnerable to the Hollywood sentimentalism in the latter part. Alfonso Cuarón uses a minimalist story to draw out primal human emotions.

What a beautiful movie. And very tense as well in some moments.

Trying to breath

Contains spoilers
Literally alone on screen, Sandra Bullock made me feel like I didn’t have enough air and I needed to take deep breaths all the time. I watched it at home but felt like a 4D movie theater. In the last scene it was like I was finding firm ground with Ryan.

Stranded in space

Life in spacecrafts may seem simple but, when in space, it is better to be inside them than outside, floating in space. Full of adrenaline and tension, this spatial adventure will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Despair in space

Sandra Bullock gives one of the most memorable performances of her career. Thanks to its technical excellence, this movie turned out to be one of the best science fiction thrillers.
