I'd rather not

Contains spoilers
This one's a tough nut to crack and most of the time, I don't want to. It's a feast for the eyes, and I'm sure Joaquin Phoenix is doing a great job, as he does, but there's not a drop of joy in this film. There's wit, but no fun. There are beautiful sets and locations, but no real charm. The surrealism of it is so jarring against the action-y parts it throws the balance of it just off. Not surprising at all that Doc is, or wants to be, stoned for most of the duration of this, you'd have to be, too, to get it; if that wasn't the desired effect, then it's just pretentious.

Surrealism and adrenaline

Joaquin Phoenix frenetic acting is key to this surreal and adrenaline filled movie. Another work of filmic art in which Phoenix is used to working.
