Southpaw (2015)★ 7.4/10

Boxing dramas often follow a set pattern, and while that’s not necessarily a problem, the real challenge lies in the execution. This film rushes through the protagonist’s lowest point, missing an opportunity to depict the full extent of his downfall. Those dark moments deserved more weight.

The film spends too long laying the groundwork for a story we’ve seen before. It follows a familiar formula and doesn’t need the runtime it demands. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a committed performance and clearly trained hard—his fight scenes are impressively technical. Still, the bouts are too few, and the film would benefit from trimming at least thirty minutes.
