I'm Glad Movies Like This Don't Exist Anymore

Last night, I'm at home watching (you guessed it) TCM. And I caught the beginning of Six Degrees of Separation.

I just want to say, I'm glad they stopped making movies like this.

The premise: Will Smith cons his way into living with rich white people, but he's gay and can't keep it in his pants so he gets discovered having sex and gets kicked out of the house only to move in with another rich white family.

It's a movie about race and sexuality and class inequality, but wow does it come across as…. what's the right word…. offensive? tone deaf? inauthentic?… in 2026.

There used to be so many movies about rich, stuffy white people. I'm glad we've gone away from that. This one being about old white people being shocked that a black guy could be so well spoken and educated, and then later so offended that he's gay, just feels totally totally awful.

And they can't even commit to earnest representation. In the one kiss scene, Will Smith obviously swaps for a body double. Per the Wikipedia page, he didn't know what his friends would think seeing him kiss another man. Yeah, this movie's really down for the cause….

Anyways, I turned it off. It was making me mad. Maybe they wrapped it up in the end, but i doubt it.

Have you seen this movie? What are your thoughts?

Alternatively, tell me what kind of movie you're glad they no longer make.

That sounds horrible-- yeah, one that I fully couldn't watch because the jokes were just so bad was The Ugly Truth, and She's Out of My League
