Run and Gun

I watched 3 big summer movies last night - basic thoughts.

Eddington

Awesome. What a tightly paced journey into the vision and anger that fuels our current situation. The protagonist is so well paced and I feel for him even as I disagree. The final conclusion that corporate interest wil win despite our social differences is the horror of Ari Aster's turn this time. I appreciate the violence and black humor. A pretty accessible movie that I think ultimately speaks to everyone. The Sheriff's anger isn't unjustified, but his actions are and they ultimately lead to an exploitation of what he was trying to do.

Sinners

Outside the cinematography and performances I found this to be B plus at best. It looks absolutely gorgeous. However I felt the dialogue continuity and action were all seriously sub par. I like Coogler but I found his obsession with fatherly relations in this one to be a stretch too far. Bro you can't dream state children of deceased characters, or deceased parents into every movie. I found the action to be sub par because it doesn't treat the geography of action well and it makes Smoke near invulnerable throughout. Loved Del Roy Lindo, hated his death. Again Beautiful movie but just only a solid B+ to me.

F1

I think its really unfair to just write this off as Top Gun: Maverick with cars. Although yeah many of the beats echo Maverick and Days of Thunder for that matter, this thing is it's own beast. If you like F1 it's a feast for the eyes, if you don't it's an introduction on a great cinematic level. I thought it captured the essence of the sport and provided a fun plot to roll with. I thought Javier Bardem was awesome in it and appreciated that teamwork became the focus in the second act not the third.

Out of the 3 I'd rank:

Eddington - 1st for best actual movie
F1 - 2nd for just being a very enjoyable time

Sinners - 3rd - It's still a good movie and I'm glad it did well. But felt like it was implying there'd be more brains and I just didn't find it. Performances were great though.

Should note Jack O'Connell is a tour de force and from the SAS show he's in to Sinners, I can't fucking wait to see him tear it up in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Interesting! Sinners is the only one I've seen of these three. I agree with your assessment, but I thought the coda with Buddy Guy really pushed it into A territory for me. I've been meaning to see Eddington. Going to have to make that happen.

a very 2025 triple feature. I think you picked a good order to go in. Ending with Eddington after 5 hours would have personally melted my brain lol
