Are remakes worth it?

Watching How To Train Your Dragon and can't stop thinking about how useless it is that they remade it word for word. I stand by that if a remake is happening it needs to be freshened up somehow. What do you guys think?

yes if they bring a fresh take that speaks to a new era

Agreed, especially remakes of good movies. If the directors can't offer significant reinterpretations of the stories, these movies are largely just a waste of resources.

It's weird that they made it a word-for-word remake. Also considering that the OG How to Train is so beloved. I guess they just really wanted a live-action version. There must be some metric out there that justifies it. Personally, I dont really like remakes. I prefer original concepts or adaptations from other mediums like novels or plays. But I can't ignore the economic sense that a remake makes.

According to me, the most challenging part about remakes is to match the expectations and standards set by the prequel. Being said that, it becomes quite tricky to cater to all the audiences as it will be mix of people watching first time along with group of people who watched the prequel.

I totally agree! A good example of this was Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland that took a unique spin on an already amazing film.
