Nobody

General Reviews

The 2021 film Nobody, starring Bob Odenkirk, is a high-octane action thriller that has earned its place as a "John Wick-style" cult favorite. Directed by Ilya Naishuller and written by Derek Kolstad (the creator of John Wick), it follows Hutch Mansell, a seemingly ordinary suburban dad whose hidden past as a lethal "auditor" resurfaces after a home invasion.

The Good Points

—Bob Odenkirk’s Transformation: Best known for his role as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, Odenkirk underwent two years of intense physical training for this role. He perfectly balances the weary "everyman" persona with a terrifyingly efficient killing machine.

—Brutal, Creative Action: The fight choreography is visceral and grounded. The standout bus fight scene is frequently cited as one of the best action sequences in recent years because the protagonist actually takes damage and feels vulnerable.

—Memorable Supporting Cast: Christopher Lloyd steals every scene he's in as Hutch’s retired FBI agent father, and RZA provides a great "pop" as his half-brother.

—Pacing and Style: At a lean 92 minutes, the film never overstays its welcome. It features a sharp, retro soundtrack and kinetic editing that keeps the energy high.

The Bad Points

—Thin Plot & Villain: Critics and audiences often note that the story is relatively simple and follows a predictable "one-man army" formula. The primary antagonist, played by Aleksey Serebryakov, is often seen as a "thinly sketched" or generic Russian mobster.

—Secondary Character Depth: While the leads shine, secondary characters like Hutch’s wife (Connie Nielsen) and son are often underutilized, feeling more like "screenplay props" than fully realized people.

—Comparison to John Wick: Some viewers find the movie redundant or a "knockoff" because it shares so much DNA with the John Wick franchise.

Is It Worth Watching?

Yes, especially if you enjoy stylized action and dark humor. It holds a "generally favorable" critical reception and an "A–" CinemaScore from audiences. It’s a satisfying "wish-fulfillment romp" that turns a suburban mid-life crisis into a blood-splattered spectacle.

Cast Performance

The actors did a superb job. Odenkirk's commitment to the physicality of the role is the heart of the film. Christopher Lloyd’s late-film involvement adds a "joyously silly" and "fantastic" energy that elevates the finale.

A sequel, Nobody 2, is currently in development and is expected to expand on Hutch's dangerous past.
