General ReviewsBrad Pitt’s ‘F1’: A High-Octane Return to the Grid
The cinematic world is gearing up for the release of F1, a high-budget sports drama starring Brad Pitt, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), and produced in collaboration with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton.
The Plot: A Tale of Redemption
The story follows Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a legendary Formula 1 driver from the 1990s whose career was derailed by a catastrophic accident. Decades later, his old friend and team owner Ruben (Javier Bardem) coaxes him out of retirement for one final shot at glory. Hayes joins the fictional APXGP team as a veteran mentor to a rising, impetuous young star, Joshua "JP" Pearce (Damson Idris). Together, the rookie and the veteran must navigate the intense pressure of the global F1 circuit to save a struggling team on the brink of collapse.
Production & Unprecedented Authenticity
Real-World Filming: Production took place during actual Grand Prix weekends across the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
The APXGP Team: The filmmakers were granted an "11th team" garage and pitwall presence, allowing Pitt and Idris to drive modified Formula 2 cars (enhanced with F1 aero-packages) directly on iconic tracks like Silverstone, Monza, and Spa-Francorchamps.
Hamilton's Influence: As a producer, Lewis Hamilton provided meticulous technical advice—from the sound of gear shifts to the specific lines drivers take through corners—to ensure the film captures the true essence of the sport.
Cinematography: Utilizing many of the same techniques seen in Top Gun: Maverick, the film features 16 different camera mounting points on the cars to provide immersive, first-person cockpit views.
Release Details
International Release: June 25, 2025.
North American Release: June 27, 2025.
Format: The film is designed for the largest screens possible, with major distribution in IMAX format.
Cast: In addition to Pitt, Idris, and Bardem, the cast includes Kerry Condon (as the team's technical director), Tobias Menzies, and Sarah Niles.
The film aims to capitalize on the massive global popularity of F1 following the success of Netflix's Drive to Survive, promising a "visceral" and "technical marvel" that brings audiences closer to the asphalt than ever before.
