Crash Landing on You (2019)★ 8.5/10

The series presents a fresh take on forbidden love, weaving a rural and urban love story between children of the elite. Some scenes are tear-jerkers, others hilarious, and a few infuriating. I watched it for my goddess, Son Yejin, who retains her charm despite aging. Love her so much!

Some plot points are so absurd they're funny, as if penned by a clueless AI, yet the show remains captivating! The storylines become somewhat clichéd and boring upon returning to South Korea, and the villain is obviously a mere plot device. The parts set in North Korea are more engaging.

Crash Landing on You has many moments designed to make viewers cry, but regardless of the obstacles the couple faced, the series constantly reminds us to love boldly. Just like the protagonists who defy all dangers to be together, we, living in a free society, should cherish and love the people in our lives wholeheartedly.

I finished this series during a period of isolation. More than the romance, what struck me was the metaphor for the North-South Korean relationship implied by the identities of the male and female leads. I had hoped more people would understand this metaphor, but was disappointed to find discussions dominated by toxic remarks about keeping the Korean Peninsula divided for the benefit of China. Ideologies should never outweigh the ordinary people's freedom, equality, and love.

The charm of the series largely stems from its contrasts: a beautiful chaebol adapting to life in North Korea with a daily diet of potatoes and eggs, the stoic high-ranking military officer revealing moments of shyness and childishness, and the middle-aged North Korean woman's enthusiasm for celebrity crushes and gossip. The humor of the supporting squad's experiences in Seoul stands out. The main romantic plotline becomes less convincing over time, relying too heavily on coincidences and a sense of destiny. The segments featuring the supporting squad are the most entertaining and could easily be made into a comedy film.

This show is absolutely fantastic! Sure, the storyline may be a bit exaggerated, but it's just so good. Gotta hand it to the Koreans. They really nail those ensemble dramas – each character is so unique and endearing. Not only do the main actors stand out, but every character really tugs at your heartstrings, leaving you with a warm feeling. The plot is quite out there, with some of the logic not quite adding up, but you find yourself getting sucked in and saying "it's so sweet," even though you know it's a bit of a cliché. I appreciate that this classic romantic drama has actually made me think. The second female lead truly delivers a fantastic performance.

The first episode almost made me want to quit, but the next three episodes turned out pretty good. The fourth episode really grabbed my attention, and I'd give this show a top rating just because of that. The main actors did a fantastic job, and the way the show depicted rural and urban areas in North Korea was quite thoughtful—it showed a high level of respect, at least. The change in the female lead's attitude subtly poked fun at the relationship between material and spiritual aspects of life. However, I hope the writers can delve deeper into the story's theme instead of getting caught up in the trivial details of romantic relationships.

The best thing about this show is how the characters grow and change unexpectedly as the story unfolds. The romance plot gradually loses its believability as it piles on too many coincidences and fate twists. On the other hand, the banter and dynamics within the small team are what I find most entertaining. They could easily spin off the team's story into a hilarious comedy movie! And let me just say, Hyun Bin is seriously good-looking. He still has that same captivating charm that drew me in when I was a teenager.
