This fast paced, moving film had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The lead actor brings both strength and vulnerability to the role. The film provides a glimpse of life in São Poalo that tourists never see. I loved the feeling of empowerment and hope the films leaves us with.

This is a smothering and visceral story. Grappling with social norms and gender expectations, this film depicts the dire existential predicament of a Brazilian woman in family, marriage, and the overarching oppressive societal structures. I think the ending provides an overly idealistic prospect, while in reality, though pessimistically, I doubt if the mother can get rid of her toxic relationship and her transfixed role expected by society.

This movie was successful addressing a difficult topic (domestic violence) in a way that didn’t centre it only on teams but on resilience, the intelligence required to change one’s life and the complexities of relationships (romantic, family, community).
