I actually can't believe how identical this is. The original is nearly perfect so it's impossible not to feel anything watching this one. That said, the fact that it exists kind of pisses me off.

Hollywood finally figured out the "safest" way to remake an animated classic—by changing nothing. The plot, art design, and characters remain untouched, and the CGI-enhanced Nordic landscapes are undeniably majestic. When Hiccup first reaches out to touch Toothless, I found myself tearing up just like I did all those years ago. It brings nothing new, but it still outshines many films today.

It's pretty much just a coat of paint on the old one. Most of it is CGI which makes the whole movie basically animated. While, it is just a paint job. It is a pretty good movie that I would rewatch if given the chance.

This is a near frame-for-frame remake of the animated version, which feels like the laziest approach possible. The live-action recreation ends up looking like a high-budget theme park experience—strangely artificial and emotionally hollow. While the female lead holds her own, most of the characters feel like awkward puppets. Worse, it repeats a 15-year-old story with zero updates, which makes it feel utterly irrelevant.

2010’s HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is one of my favorite animated classics, so obviously now there’s a remake that just came out. This is a live-action remake of an animated movie that was based on a book written by Cressida Cowell. It tells the story of Hiccup (Mason Thames), a young inventive Viking who lives in a small village constantly at war with dragons. After befriending a dragon he calls Toothless, Hiccup realizes that they don’t need to be at war at all. This movie is exactly what we need right now. It has a poignant message of de-escalating violence, of coming together as a society instead of being in a state of division. Gerard Butler reprises his previously voiced role as Stoick the Vast, Chief of the village and Hiccup’s father. It was great seeing him look the part. The whole cast does a great job. They really put in the work in terms of CGI and visuals. A warning if you have kids younger than 7, the dragons look scarier in this version. This movie is pretty much a shot-for-shot remake, which might make you think of why they even bothered doing this. If you’re going to do a remake, go talk to the original creator. Original director Dean Dublois found out Dreamworks was planning to do this, so he asked if he could direct it. He just wanted to protect his baby. This has the same beautiful score and the same heartfelt story. What Disney has failed to do for at least the past decade, Dreamworks has been successful at. They trusted the story. It was great 15 years ago and guess what, it’s still great today. Don’t try and fix what isn’t broken. This is 25 minutes longer, which expands certain characters and showcases the beautiful Belfast scenery. The heart is here. Even though I’ve seen this before, it still pulled me in just like it did the first time. The cynical version of me could easily say this is yet another pointless cash-grab of a live-action remake, but this one successfully stifled that version of me. Despite the fact that HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is a remake, it is still a fantastic fantasy fit for the whole family. I’m excited to see what they do in the planned 2027 sequel.
