It had so much potential with its cast but it felt lackluster at the end

This movie was kind of a waste of time. Will Poulter made the movie, but everything else was forgettable.

A fairytale setup masks a grim commentary on human nature. The unicorn evolves with the story: first pink and healing, then gray and furious, and finally pure white—liberating the kind-hearted from harm. The unicorn might represent the mother’s spirit, or perhaps the last shred of innocence we all carry. Either way, its transformation is the film’s emotional core.

The film leans heavily on clichés, like the strained father-daughter dynamics, and the cartoonish ultra-rich elites. The unicorn’s VFX are serviceable but never standout. Trimming down the story could’ve helped, especially since many of the death scenes are so telegraphed they lose any sort of tension.

When you think about unicorns, as one does, they’re these white, possibly fluffy, majestic creatures that give us a feeling that everything will be okay. The new A24 movie DEATH OF A UNICORN takes that and twists it into a fun, over-the-top but clever satire. Elliot (Paul Rudd) is a widowed father of Ridley (Jenna Ortega). They drive down to Elliot’s boss’ house Odell, who is dying and needs a proxy to run his company after he’s gone. Other characters include Odell’s wife Belinda (Téa Leoni), their spoiled son Shephard (Will Poulter), and their butler Griff (Anthony Carrigan). On the drive up, Elliot and Ridley hit what looks like a small horse with a girthsome protrusion coming out of its head. Disturbed, they put it in the trunk and carry on. When the others find out, well, they “horse around and find out”. I really enjoyed most of this movie. The amazing cast ensemble knows what kind of movie this is, and has fun with it, especially Poulter and Carrigan. I guess you can think of this as a more humorous JURASSIC PARK. Greedy narcissistic people playing around with something they don’t understand, you know the deal. It gets more violent as the movie goes on. I enjoyed the great but unlikeable characters, each having their moments to shine. The moments of CGI weren’t the greatest, but on a budget of only $15 million, I can’t blame them. My only problem with this movie is how they end up showing us a few different paths the story could go, but it doesn’t really go down any of them. They’re all good ideas, but it would’ve been better if it stuck to one and delved deeper. Other than that, the humor is funny and the violence is violent. Whether DEATH OF A UNICORN works for you or not, original movies are always a welcome and refreshing sight.
