John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)★ 8.5/10

Combining A-list budget and framework with action sequences beyond what most A-list films can hope to achieve, this film incorporates and upgrades elements borrowed from Hong Kong cinema and prior works of the actors. Despite the old-fashioned plot, it still manages to captivate audiences in an era dominated by superheroes, which is itself a kind of miracle.

It's astonishing how this series evolved from a B-movie into a top-tier production. "John Wick: Chapter 4" excels in cinematography, set design, art direction, and lighting, accompanied by consistently impressive action scenes, making it one of the best action franchises today.

Probably the weakest story in the series yet, one that barely feels like it escalates the overall stakes of the series compared to what 2 and 3 did. This wouldn't be a major complaint had this movie been clocked in at around 120 minutes, but unfortunately this chapter comes across as frustratingly bloated, leaving me tapping my foot waiting for the next action sequence to kick in. But it still gets a positive score because the action was sick as ever and it was cool to see shots with actual colors and personality. On those fronts, this is probably the series' high point. And I like the guy with the dog :)

It's hard to believe this series has come such a long way from a B-movie in the first film to where it is now. Everything in this latest film, from the cinematography, set design, art direction, and lighting, is top-notch. Coupled with the always satisfying action scenes, this movie is definitely one of the best action movie series out there today.

Y encima traen a Donnie Yen.
