I have no words to describe it; they sold the idea of a different kind of film to the media, but the movie is quite confusing, with nonsensical scenes and exaggerated sounds.

In the final scene, Jamie sees the baby return to the village and reads Spike’s farewell. He breaks down and bolts out the gates—this father who had long given up on hope finally runs toward something. Director Danny Boyle never shows us a reunion. The frame cuts on Jamie’s back as he runs, leaving questions unanswered. That image alone was deeply powerful.

What moved me most was Isla’s decision to let go. Aware of her illness and her son’s impossible burden, she chooses to stay behind so Spike can escape with the baby. Her sacrifice isn’t played for melodrama—it’s a quiet, clear-eyed act of love.

Back in 2002, we were introduced to a new post-apocalyptic world in 28 DAYS LATER. It was gritty and awesome. Then we had 28 WEEKS LATER. Now, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reunited for what they say is the beginning of a new trilogy, which sounds a little strange. I would go into this movie without thinking about the previous movies. This is more of an extension of the world than a sequel. In 28 YEARS LATER, it’s been 28 years since the Rage virus spread out of control, turning people into zombies, essentially. On the isolated island of Lindesfarne in the British Isles, a small self-sufficient community lives in relative peace. They are protected by a causeway that disappears during high tide. Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) lives there with his ailing wife Isla (Jodie Comer) and son Spike (Alfie Williams). Jaime takes his son out to the mainland for his first infected kill, changing Spike’s perspective on the world. I didn’t expect him to be the lead of this new trilogy. Alfie does an amazing job carrying this movie through so much madness. It’s a coming-of-age survival drama wrapped up in a dangerous pandemic. It has a unique blend of genre and tone that might not work for everybody. It’s scary, emotionally dramatic, funny, bold, and sometimes even bizarre and wacky. I really enjoyed the expansion of the lore of this post-apocalyptic brutal world. Saying that, there were a couple times where I wasn’t clear on some of the rules, regarding how people can get infected. Some moments are extremely tense, highlighting great sound design and cinematography. There’s a ton of realistic-looking violence, and most of the infected are naked. Lotta things swinging around. Ralph Fiennes is in this movie as a fascinating character I can’t talk about. This was more unconventional than I thought it would be, which is a good thing in my mind. It’s stylish, experimental, and there are some things that I can’t unsee. It leans into lunacy near the end, leaving us on a cliffhanger. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have created a very interesting world in 28 YEARS LATER, and I’m excited to see more of it in January with 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE.
