Dog Man (2025)★ 6.7/10

Beneath its wacky premise, the film explores profound themes of family, growth, and morality. Petey’s journey toward empathy, influenced by Lil’ Petey, underscores the power of love and connection. It encourages viewers to reflect on what truly defines family. However, the storytelling occasionally meanders, with some disjointed plot developments that disrupt narrative flow.

The film is highly whimsical and creative, featuring a human-dog hybrid, talking animals, and a slew of quirky inventions that craft a delightfully absurd world. It caters to children’s boundless creativity while also incorporating humor aimed at adults, with playful nods to classic films and pop culture references. This dual-layered comedy ensures entertainment for all ages.

While it caters to fans, the film is crafted with care. It faithfully replicates the art style and includes key scenes and nuances from the comics. The film even breaks the fourth wall by incorporating comic-style text into the visuals—a creative touch that captures the original’s essence.

"Dog Man" combines several stories from the source material DreamWorks style, creating an engaging 3D transition from the 2D original. The plot feels faithfully adapted, and as a fan of the books, seeing the original dialogue on the big screen was immensely satisfying.

The newest animated movie is sort of a spinoff of the comic-turned-movie CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, called DOG MAN. It tells the story of a fairly stupid cop and his very smart dog. After a tragic bomb defusal accident, the doctors decided to sew the dog’s head onto the man’s body (obvious choice) to create Dog Man, supa cop! His feline archnemesis Petey (Pete Davidson), tired of being thwarted at every crazy invention he makes, decides to clone himself. Reading the instructions wrong, he basically creates an innocent younger self, Lil’ Petey. Oh and Ricky Gervais plays a maniacal telekinetic fish called Flippy. This movie sounds very silly and stupid, but I had an amazing time. Yes it’s very silly, but it's done in such a heart-warming and hilarious way you never really question the logic. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed this much in an animated movie. The humour is on point, for both kids and adults. Something I didn’t expect was how it slightly pulled the heartstrings, very well-played good sir. It sounded like everybody had fun filming it, especially Pete Davidson and Ricky Gervais. I’m not surprised this is doing so well. The animation is great, making it feel like a comic come to life. I also enjoyed the fun animated short before the movie began. Remember, this is coming from a guy who had never read a Dog Man comic. If you’re already a fan, what are you still doing here reading this review? Get out there and see DOG MAN. I don’t care if it takes a montage!
