The last romantic

A reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s century-old silent classic, this marks the third major adaptation of the horror legend. Unlike Murnau’s grotesque, bald, and clawed creature, the 2024 Nosferatu feels eerily human. With dull gray-green skin and sluggish movements, he seems more like a dying man lurking in the shadows than a monster. Rather than being a mere symbol of darkness, he embodies existential loneliness and despair—an abyss pulling everything into his void.

The film elevates Gothic aesthetics from mere style to an all-encompassing atmosphere, turning darkness and death into something almost religious. Nosferatu becomes the embodiment of this faith, luring his followers into offering themselves to him through plague and mortality. It introduces a fresh sensibility to the Gothic tradition, setting itself apart from earlier interpretations.

The film’s shadowy aesthetic, stark contrasts, and haunting lighting create a foreboding atmosphere reminiscent of Eggers’ earlier works. Nicholas Hoult’s performance stands out, anchoring the story with his mesmerizing intensity. The music is exceptional, and the film’s fidelity to the 1922 version is evident, making it a worthy homage.

From "The VVitch" to "The Lighthouse," and now "Nosferatu," Robert Eggers consistently delivers films with stunning visual appeal and compelling storytelling. In a time when the film industry is saturated with vampire tropes, this movie still manages to craft breathtaking and electrifying scenes, filled with delightful nods to the 1922 classic for cinephiles to savor.

Never give an ugly man a chance

There have been many, many versions of the vampire known as Dracula over the decades, some with another name, Nosferatu. There is now a remake of the classic 1922 silent gothic horror film of the same name, NOSFERATU. It’s 1838 in Germany. Thomas (Nicolas Hoult), a real estate clerk, is presented an opportunity for promotion by his boss Herr Knock (Simon McBurney). He must go sell a house to the reclusive Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) in Transylvania, leaving behind new wife Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) and her friends Anna (Emma Corrin) and Friedrich (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). I thought this movie is fantastic. Writer and director Robert Eggers has now made four feature films: THE WITCH, THE LIGHTHOUSE, THE NORTHMAN, and now NOSFERATU. All of these are bangers. It seems like he enjoys telling us dark, twisted stories from the past, this one the darkest of all. Not only the subject matter, but it’s physically dark as well. Eggers is so adept here, using shadows to strike fear and a looming sense of dread into his characters. I believe this is my favourite vampire movies. It doesn’t hold back; the cinematography and visuals are masterfully done. The acting talent from everybody is Oscar-worthy, especially Bill with his transformative makeup and accented raspy voice, and Lily-Rose with the various aspects of what her character has to go through. Shoutout to Willem Dafoe for being in pretty much everything these days, and always kicking ass, acting-wise. The concept of vampires has always been sexual in nature, and it’s no different here. I liked how religion, science, and superstition bounce off each other here. Even though this is a fantasy, it feels authentic. It does feel a little long at over two hours though. Overall, NOSFERATU is a dark, faithful remake that elevates the vampire subgenre to new heights, and I can’t wait to see what Eggers does next!
