Carey Mulligan hates happiness

The movie is really perplexing, almost schizophrenic, swinging between extreme long shots that seamlessly blend the characters' words and beautiful cinematography with the performance in the background and exaggerated close-ups with cameras almost shoving into the actors' faces to highlight over-the-top acting. The plot is exaggerated and hard to believe, but I can't overlook Cooper's passion for classical Hollywood and classical music.

As a biographical film about a musician, it falls short of capturing the essential musical elements, and this is one thing it fares worse than the pseudo-biopic “Tár”. It also lacks a compelling and convincing narrative angle, simply providing an unremarkable reflection of different stages in this musician's life. This self-centered creative approach is quite disappointing. I'd rate the production a four out of ten.

It is absolutely stunning and moving, showcasing the endless complexity and contradictions within human nature, and I believe this movie will truly endure in the history of cinema. It impressively captures the essence of understanding Bernstein within a wide array of footage. Here, Bradley Cooper revisits the theme he previously explored in "A Star is Born": the push and pull between artistry and showmanship. The film's production is flawless, with several breathtaking musical scenes and impressive sound effects, creating an unforgettable viewing experience.

This movie is definitely an improvement compared to "A Star is Born." Cooper and Mulligan both deliver outstanding performances, and several iconic conducting scenes are also faithfully recreated. However, the film as a whole feels a bit scattered and lacks inspiration. The creative black-and-white cinematography and musical elements that were present at the beginning have completely disappeared by the end, leaving the movie feeling like a superficial biopic.

OMG Bradley Cooper is talented! I believe Maestro will be a strong competitor in the Oscar season. Cooper and Carey Mulligan will get their nominees for best actor and actress. The film is so fluent and it reminded me of An American in Paris in the first act. To sum up, Maestro is one of my favourites in 2023.
