Although I prefer the book, this movie never fails to make me cry—at least internally. From its stunning cinematography to the nostalgic soundtrack, it will always be one of my favourites.

A poetic summer romance

“Our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once… Right now, there’s sorrow, pain. Don’t kill it and with it the joy you’ve felt.” says father Samuel (Michael Stuhlbarg) near the end of Luca Guadagnino’s landmark LGBT love story Call Me By Your Name. This film destroys me in the most beautiful way possible: such a heartbreaking story of romantic melancholy and self-discovery, entwined with gorgeous scenery and the actors' amazing chemistry.

The summer of love and secrets
Set in the summer of 1983, the film opens with the picturesque sunny Northern Italian landscapes. Elio (Timothée Chalamet), the 17-year-old son of an archaeology professor, spent indolent summer days in composing piano concertos by the pool or flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel) at the brink of adulthood. His quotidian routine is interrupted by the arrival of a summer guest named Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old American graduate student who works as a research assistant to Elio's father. Fascinated by Oliver’s handsome looks, his sleek swimmer's body, and casual yet tender whispers, Elio begins to harbor a secret infatuation with him — hopeless though it may appear — for the first time. As the summer progresses, Oliver and Elio slowly move toward each other as if in a waltz with careful, delicate steps.

The journey of sexual awakening and erotic exploration
Despite the struggle to conceal their feelings of mutual crush, it is impossible to escape such an inevitable destiny because the chemistry between them is so intense: the older man bewitched by the beauty and delicacy of youth; the teenage boy drowning in his senior's charisma and mature masculinity. According to Roshke (2017), the peach scene marks the moment when both Elio and Oliver surrender to their feelings. They are fully opening themselves to this love and letting it seep into their skin and bones. The erotic exploration culminates in the whispers of each other's names — “Call me by your name, and I'll call you by mine.”

A beautiful piece of naturalistic filmmaking
Luca Guadagnino, the director of Call me by your name, is a master of erotic aesthetics. The longing for sensual pleasure, intimacy and connection permeates the film, depicted in a subtle and artful way. I am fascinated by the abundance of greenery and the exquisite beauty of the Italian countryside: visually stunning, pleasant and rich with symbolism. A summer fling happens naturally in such a romantic vibe. Besides, the soundtrack is phenomenal. It evokes a rich world of imagery and echoes the themes of painful youth, self-discovery, sophisticated sensuality, and unregrettable love.

Yes, please call me, or else I won't wake up

Very high points for cinematography, direction, acting, pretty much everything. It's a beautiful, gorgeous piece of work. It's a shame it's so incredibly boring. I fell asleep at some point during one of the very long speeches about life and philosophy and whatnot. But Chalamet still rocks, though.

Sorry, just on my flight to Italy now as I write this...

A beautiful piece of work that somehow makes you feel nostalgic and achey at the same time, and it is truly deep-cutting in a very beautiful way. Nonetheless, it does get at times extremely heavy to watch. The ideas and themes are exciting, but the way they discuss/ present them sometimes, though very soulful and intelligent, can very quickly turn into that one air hostess on the intercom who just won't shut up about stuff you can do during your flight when you really just wanna sleep. Still, incredible production design, cinematography, and performances.

Love and pain

Call Me by Your Name taught me that summer always brings a new love, but none is as important as the one that helps you know yourself better. A beautiful homage to independent cinema.

Love is beautiful

Call Me by Your Name is a beautiful story of self-discovery told through a fresh direction and camera sequences that resemble the old Italian movies.
