The concept is new, and the worldview is quickly built; it's not meant to scare you but to keep you on your toes, even managing to silence your surroundings. It doesn't forget the human emotional connection while thrilling the audience. The ending is kinda abrupt but it makes sense. William Castle had audiences screaming along with the characters in the theater 60 years ago, feeling what the onscreen humans feel; now it's the opposite. Horror films have always been changing and developing, both being "high concept" films of their time.

How does it even get such rave reviews? A first-rate horror concept is made into this third-rate production. The disastrous screenwriting can be blamed on the logical flaws of horror movies, but the editing and pacing are horrible, and relying on a few jump scares to scare the audience is very cheap. The characters and emotions are not portrayed or developed well. What's so good about it?

This horror movie becomes an interaction with the audience with the concept of silence, which is a very innovative viewing experience for me. The script writing applies a minimalist approach, and the director has great control over the atmosphere. Using a small family unit to convey the mainstream American values of kinship, the director spends a lot of time in the first half building up to expressing this theme in the later half. In the end you’ll realize that the point is not about fighting monsters, but about the parents' selfless love for their children.

A horror movie that relies on "ideas" and a strong setting is bound to be full of bugs. The biggest problem is the ending's resolution, where the monster can still be eliminated with a gun even though the high-pitched noise is a newfound weapon, which is really frustrating and boring. By backtracking from the ending, a lot of what happened before actually becomes untenable. This movie at first glance will seem like it has a clever setup and ideas, but finally you’ll see that those are just petty tricks.

It is Cthulhu coupled with claustrophobia. The fireworks and barn scenes are good, but the scares are all cheap jump scares. The sound edits are similar to the knocking on doors in The Conjuring, where the volume is turned right up, going straight for the eardrums and the heart, making the viewers physiologically uncomfortable. The story background is so illogical; the easily vanquished monsters can defeat the entire army. Isn't it insulting to the army? In the beginning, when the family is lining up, letting their child walk at the end of the line is obviously a brainless move courting death. Also, being pregnant at such times?
